Wabi Sabi
"Wabi Sabi" is a Japanese concept that finds beauty in imperfection, both in nature and art. Rather than seeking flawlessness, Wabi Sabi embraces rustic elements and the natural cycles of growth and decay. It teaches that something "imperfect" may still possess profound beauty.
This philosophy is deeply reflected in my Colorado organic pottery designs. My work is organic and unstructured, capturing the essence of the mountains, trees, rocks, and sky through natural colors and forms. Each piece aims to echo the serene beauty and subtle imperfection found in the landscape around me.
My appreciation for pottery began during my childhood in Japan, where I lived as the child of missionary parents who admired rustic Japanese ceramics. Their passion for collecting pottery inspired me, fostering my own love for these art forms.
After retiring from my career as a pediatric speech pathologist, I pursued ceramics more seriously by enrolling in both in-person and online classes. Through techniques such as slab-building and wheel-throwing, I have found immense joy in creating pottery that embodies the Wabi Sabi spirit.
Natural Influences
Colorado Textures and Colors
Colorado's big skies, rugged mountains, lakes, rivers, and green spaces provide a potter endless inspiration. Earthy browns and reds layer rock structures, grasslands spread out in greens and tans, against a sky filled with hues ranging from smoky blue to brilliant turquoise. The medium of pottery allows an artist to work in colors and textures that echo the landscape itself.
